Gardening 101 Workshop

February 7 


Topic: “Soils, Composting and Vermiculture” - 9:30 a.m. to 12 Noon.
Topic: “Propagation” - 1-3 p.m.

Advanced Master Gardener Larry Averill and Garden Director Bob Byers will tell how to start now to get your beds ready for spring planting by preparing the soil. They’ll also discuss “nature’s way of recycling” by composting and vermicomposting. GWG horticulture supervisor Paula Wallace and Kristin Warner give hands on lessons in propagation including various grafting, root cutting and layering techniques. The class, limited to 20, will meet in the Magnolia Room before going to the Garden’s Greenhouse.

Daffodil Days

February 15 - March 7 2012


Enjoy the dance of more than 200,000 daffodils in various shades of yellow when these happy blooms make their annual appearance in the Gardens. The spring blooms are sponsored by Wells Fargo Advisors - Hot Springs, AR Office. Open daily 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Regular Garden admission applies. "Off the Garden Path"

February 18 


Magnolia Room and Gardens; 9:30-Noon

Take a stroll down memory lane with Garden Director Bob Byers as he shares some of the early history of the Gardens. He’ll take you “off the garden path” for a view of some of the first plantings made by Verna Garvan and visit the site of the Gardens’ first entrance where visitors came by boat. Mrs. Garvan, alias Susan Harper, will also make an appearance and share her life story.

Topic: "Camellias and Early Spring Interest in the Garden" - 9:30 a.m. to Noon
Topic: " What Do I Do with All These Plants I keep Buying" - 1 to 3 p.m.

Garden Director Bob Byers will share information about camellias, including their history, flower forms, care, and cultivation techniques. This class will take participants on a walk through the Gardens to see the camellias planted by Verna Garvan. In the afternoon, Elizabeth Frazier of Landscape Design Company, will share tips for using plants in the garden.

"Three Artists Exhibit"

March 1 - March 31 2012


“Three Artists” Exhibit -- Daily 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. -- Magnolia Room. Three artists - Sheliah Halderman, Marlene Gremillion, and Linda Shearer - from Hot Springs Village will display a collection of works  in the Magnolia Room the month of March.

Topic:  “Daffodils and Garden Walk” -- 9:30 a.m. to 12 Noon. 
Topic: “Garden Lighting” -- 1 to 3 p.m.

Daffodil enthusiast Kay Shearer will give the “basics” of the daffodil, describing the 13 different classifications with photo samples of each classification, and examples of how daffodils can be used in the landscape.  There will be a Q & A time at the end of her presentation.  The class will include a walk in the garden to Daffodil Hill lead by Garden Director, Bob Byers. Charlie Mowery and Jeremy Nail of Keeling Company will discuss how outdoor lighting offers the opportunity to enjoy your garden and landscaping during more than just the daylight hours. They will talk about advantages, options, innovations, and installation of low-voltage outdoor lighting. Mrs. Garvan's Tea

March 13 


Magnolia Room; 3 p.m.

This delightful afternoon tea features a living history presentation of Mrs. Verna Garvan, the Gardens' benefactress. Enjoy traditional tea fare and be entertained by Susan Harper, alias Mrs. Garvan. Tulip Extraganza

March 15 - April 7 2012


Depending on the mood of Mother Nature, the Gardens’ annual exhibit of spring color, including 121,000 vibrant tulips, daffodils, and tens of thousands of fragrant hyacinths, hundreds of red, pink, and white azaleas and thousands of delicate dogwood blossoms will be on center stage for a show like no other in the Natural State. Come join Garden Director Bob Byers as he discusses tulips including bulb selection, soil preparation and planting techniques.  His presentation will include a brief historical overview of these popular garden bulbs.  Bob will lead the class out into the garden to enjoy the colorful display of 121,000 tulips. Special Arts Series - “The Art of Pysanky”

March 25 


Magnolia Room; 1 to 5 p.m.

Join the Gardens’ talented landscape architect, Bob Byers, as he teaches the ancient Ukrainian art form of painting intricate designs on eggs.  The one-of-a-kind eggs make wonderful gifts, especially at Easter.  Cost for the workshop is $12 for GWG members and $19 for non-members.  Class not recommended for children.  Advance reservations and pre-payment are required.  Call the Gardens at 501-262-9300/800-366-4664 to reserve space.
