Gardening 101 Workshop

March 12, 2010
Topic: Daffodils and a Garden Walk - Magnolia Room and Garden - 9:30 a.m. to 12 Noon.
Topic: Lovely Lavender - Millsap Bride’s Hall - 1:30 to 3:30 p.m.

The Gardens’ Resident Landscape Architect Bob Byers will discuss in the morning session the many varieties of daffodils that prosper in the Central and Southwestern part of Arkansas and share images of the vibrant, early spring blooms. After the discussion, Byers will escort participants to Daffodil Hill and other locations to view this year’s daffodil displays. The day-long workshop is free of charge to GWG members or those previously registered as volunteers at the Gardens. The public will be subject to Garden Admission fees, which are $8.75 for adults, $7.75 for seniors. Garland County Master Gardener and herb guru, Carol Scholp, will discuss the many uses of lavender and demonstrate cooking with lavender, as well as using luscious lavender plants in homemade spa products. The cost of the lavender session is $15 per person that will cover price of materials and purchase of a lavender plant that each participant will take home. Advance reservations and pre-payment are required for the lavender workshop that is limited to 15 people. Reservations are recommended for the daffodil workshop. Gardening 101 & 102 Workshop

Topic: New Annuals (201) -- 1:00 to 2:00 p.m.
Topic: Gardening for your Health (101) -- 2: 00 to 3:00 p.m.

The Gardens’ senior horticulturist, Paul Wallace, will discuss during the morning session when and how to propagate plants -- a project that you can undertake in your own home garden. In the first hour of the afternoon session, Sabrina Childs, a Ball Seed Company representative, will discuss the newest annual plants you will be able to purchase this spring at local nurseries. The second afternoon session will feature Dr. Ryan Johnston, Hot springs’ newest chiropractor and natural health specialist. He will demonstrate how the body’s biomechanics break down and what can be done to increase your longevity when working in the garden. Tulip Extravaganza

Vegetable Gardening Workshop

March 25, 2010
Magnolia Room; 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Learn tips for planting and maintaining a garden during this day-long workshop featuring U of A Cooperative Extension Service Horticulturist Janet Carson. Carson will provide the basics for vegetable gardening, while guest presenters Bob Byers, Betsy Spetich, Bob Warner, and Briana Moore lecture on an array of topics such as composting, worm farming, landscaping with herbs, and organic vegetable gardening. Registration is limited and pre-payment will be required. Cost is $45 for GWG members and $55 for non-members. Lunch is included. Call the Gardens at 501-262-9300/800-366-4664.

Anthony Chapel

Designed by Jennings + McKee Architects, headquartered in Fayetteville, AR, the Anthony Chapel is an amazing work of art created to capture the beauty and natural elements of the dense woods and 4 1/2 miles of Lake Hamilton shoreline surrounding it . The soaring 57-foot, open-rafter ceiling, supported by massive pine columns and crossbeams, is sure to enhance the floor-to-ceiling windows and flagstone floors. The inspiring Anthony Chapel is beautifully complimented by Garvan Woodland Gardens, Arkansas' premier location for memorable family events.

    This one-acre landscaped masterpiece will offer a lawn area ideal for weddings up to 80 guests. The area is surrounded by birch trees, hydrangeas, and colorful annual plants. A stone bridge and water feature will provide an elegant setting for photographs.

    $350.00 - 2-hour maximum

    Rehearsals

    Rehearsals are complimentary if held during regular Garden operating hours - 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

    Reception Areas

    Garvan Woodland Gardens offers several lovely sites to accommodate wedding receptions from the lavish to the informal. Please note that all rental rates are for a maximum 4-hour time allotment.

    This venue will accommodate about 80 people for a reception and/or 40 people seated at round tables with eight (8) chairs per table.

    $500 - 2-hour maximum

    Price includes tables, chairs, and labor for setting up event.

    Garvan Pavilion

    Designed by internationally recognized architect, E. Fay Jones, the Garvan Pavilion will accommodate up to 120 guests under roof with additional seating available on the outside perimeter.

    $500 - 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
    $750 - 5 p.m. to 10 p.m.

    Fee includes equipment and labor for setting up tables and chairs for the first 100 people See the Equipment Rental List for cost of additional tables, chairs, A/V equipment, tablecloths, etc.

    Located adjacent to the Pratt Welcome Center, this area will comfortably accommodate 120 to 150 people for a reception.

    Anthony Chapel and Reception Area Guidelines

    • No decorations of any kind will be allowed in the Anthony Chapel, except floral arrangements.

    • Nothing can be adhered to any part of the chapel structure, including walls, windows, doors, floors, beams, pews, lighting fixtures, and vestibule. The same applies to the Millsap Bride's Hall and Evans Grooms Quarters.

    • The Anthony Chapel will seat 160 people. Additional seating will not be allowed in the aisles or at the back of the building.

    • Absolutely no smoking is allowed in any Garvan Woodland Gardens venue, including the Gardens themselves.

    • No food, beverages, or gum will be allowed in the Anthony Chapel.

    • Designated times for rehearsals, ceremonies, and receptions will be strictly enforced.

    • Garvan Woodland Gardens is open to the public 50 weeks of the year, meaning Visitors will have access to areas of the Gardens where receptions may take place.

    • Acoustical music is always welcome at Garvan Woodland Gardens. Strings and wind instruments can add to the enjoyment of the day. Taped and amplified music must not distract or be offensive to the Gardens' non-wedding visitors or be unreasonably loud.

    • Due to heavy visitation at the Gardens during certain seasons, parking may become a problem. Wedding participants and guests are encouraged to car pool. Limited parking spaces are available near the Anthony Chapel.

    • All details relating to the wedding ceremony and/or reception must be conveyed to the Gardens' wedding supervisor at least two weeks prior to the scheduled event. This includes names of florists, caterers, the wedding planner, and the officiant.

    • Absolutely no glitter or confetti is allowed in the Anthony Chapel, Millsap Bride's Hall, Evans Groom's Quarters or any venue within the Gardens.

    • If flower attendants drop petals preceding the bride's walk down the aisle, no matter which venue is being used for the ceremony, it is the responsibility of the wedding party to remove the petals at the conclusion of the ceremony or before departing the Gardens.

    • The only celebratory item that can be thrown during the departure of the bride and groom is bird seed. Other options include a bubble machine or flower petal, to be removed by wedding party.

    • If any venues are not left clean and litter-free, a $100 clean up fee will be assessed. This also applies to caterers who use the Welcome Center and Millsap Bridal Hall catering kitchens.


    • Evans Groom's Hall
    • Food service must be provided by a preferred Garvan Woodland Gardens caterer that is licensed by the State of Arkansas and holds required tax permits and liability insurance coverage. Wedding cakes and punch are the only exceptions. Glassware and china are NOT allowed in the Gardens or its structures, excluding glass flutes (one each) for the traditional wedding party toast at the reception and glass containers provided by the caterer for serving food.

    • The use of alcoholic beverages must be approved by the Garvan Woodland Gardens' wedding supervisor .* Security may be required at the expense of the wedding party. Alcohol may be served but not sold. Garvan Woodland Gardens accepts no liability for the actions of the group or its guests at alcohol related events.

    * The wedding supervisor is an employee of Garvan Woodland Gardens and should not take the place of a wedding planner. Supervisor responsibilities include event set up and tear down, coordination among florists, caterers, and other vendors. The wedding planner is the responsibility of the wedding party.
